Understanding the Different Types of Industrial Pumps

Understanding the Different Types of Industrial Pumps

There are countless processes and industries that need industrial pumps to function. The efficient transportation of liquids is so vital for most infrastructure that almost every building needs industrial pumps. Most pumps don’t work the same way, as each business and system might need a different method of moving liquids. Here’s a simple guide that should help with understanding the different types of industrial pumps so you can keep your pumps in good repair.

Centrifugal Pump

There are two main types of industrial pumps that people use in their systems: centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps. The centrifugal pump uses a system of impellers that create suction along the pipe to draw in the liquid. These pumps work best for low-viscosity liquids that need fast flow rates.

Positive Displacement Pumps

Unlike centrifugal pumps that use impellers for suction, the positivize displacement pumps use a pushing mechanism for liquid flow. There are many different types of positive displacement pumps that use different pushing mechanisms, such as pistons or rotating parts. This system is great for many different types of liquids, but the flow rate is always stuck at a certain limit no matter the flow pressure at the input or output.

Other Types of Pumps

Sometimes, your system doesn’t need or use either of these two kinds of pumps, in which case, it uses a specialty pump. There isn’t a commonality between these pumps that makes them convenient for categorizing, but they’re just as useful as the two main types of pumps. Hopefully, this helps you with understanding the different types of industrial pumps you can install in your system.

This guide isn’t all-inclusive and only covers the most popular kinds of industrial pumps. Luckily, this means that you can easily find a pump that’ll fit your system and possibly improve it if you redesign your equipment. If you’re not looking for a new kind of pump but want a replacement part, it’s best to call a good pump repair service company.
